Smoking preferences of 2005

Al presented in formation is based on survey done by The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) of United States. According to publications, in 2005 most preferred cigarette brand that Americans smoke remain Marlboro that are followed by Newport, Camel, Basic, Doral, Kool, Winston, Parliament, Salem, and USA Gold.

This affirmation is sustained by following statistic: from 100% interviewers, 42.2 % sustained that they smoke Marlboro brand, 11.3 % said that they prefer Newport cigarettes, 7.5 smoke Camel, Basic was used by 4.2%, lower percentage is for Doral, 3.1, Kool and Winston are smoked in same proportion 2.9, lesser were used Parliament brand 2.0 and on same place were located Salem and USA Gold with 1.9 %. This presentation is a general overview about smoking preferences of year 2005.

Even, this statistic differs if it is taken into account the demographic aspect. Research showed that cigarette brand use varies by age, gender, and race/ethnicity. Marlboro remained the leading brand and counting largest percentage of smokers. From people aged 18 to 25 this well known brand is lightened up by 50.8 %, Newport by 17.8, Camel by 13.8, Parliament brand is preferred by 4.5 % and Kool by 2.3%.

But tastes are changing with time and same is for smokers that are aged 26 and under. Even it is lower in percentage then precedent account it still remained the leader with 39.8%, Newport by 8.7%, Camel brand is placed on third place with 5.6 %, Basic cigarettes were smoked by 5.2% and on last place is a new brand for this category, Doral that were used by 3.9%.

Interesting representation of tobacco preferences is from geographical point of view. As it was presented by The US National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) Marlboro was the cigarette brand used most often by cigarette smokers in large metropolitan, small metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas, Newport was the second-most prevalent brand in large metropolitan and small metropolitan areas, while Camel was the second-most prevalent brand in non-metropolitan areas. Metropolitan areas classified by the Office of Management and Budget are the following: large metropolitan areas have a population of 1 million or more. Small metropolitan areas have a population of fewer than 1 million. Non-metropolitan areas are outside metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs).

Offering a percentaged representation of the smoking statistics it would look like follows: In Northeast part legendary Marlboro brands was utilized by 37.7%, Newport by 18.2 %, Camel was smoked by 6.0%, Parliament preferred by 5.6% of cig’ users and USA Gold by 4.3%. Statistics differ in some brands for Midwest part of country. As usually Marlboro brand is first controlling 38.6 of smokers’ predilections, Newport by 10.7%, Camel was lightened up by 8.8 %, Basic is positioned on fourth place with 6.8 % and Kool by 4. %.

In southern part for Marlboro brand had preferences 45.1 %, Newport constituted 12.4 %, Camel and Doral were smoked by same amount 5.0 % and Basic werwe smoked by 3.9 % of tobacco users.

And the last location remained Western part that showed the following statistics: Marlboro 47.7%, Camel 11.9%, Basic 3.4 %, Newport 3.3 % and Kool 2.9%.

The four U.S. regions consist of the following groups of States: Northeast Region: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont. Midwest Region: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin. South Region: Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia. West Region: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming.
