Freedom of free-smoke in jail

Published on Wed, 30 May 2007 2:05 pm

If there is any freedom that will have prisoners it is that of choose a smoke-free or no cells. This new introduction will come into force after July 1, when smoking ban will begin.

Why to introduce such offer into prisons? Cells are exempted from the ban because they are classed as an inmate's home. Prisoners also do not have the alternative of going outside for a quick smoke.

After tobacco prohibition will be implemented, cell that will be for smoking prisoners will be equipped with ventilators if the cell hadn’t windows to clean the air.

For personals that work on this locals also are provided some exceptions. So, officers will not be required to go into a cell if there is a prisoner that light up a tobacco product. Exception can be if it is an emergency.

It seems to be a good introduction, because namely in prisons people live into environment where is no windows to ventilate the air. This can result different diseases that with time can had lethal result.

This idea isn’t sustained by everybody. For example, Martin Callanan, a Tory Euro-MP, said: “Why should the taxpayer pick up the cost of moving prisoners and the expense of extraction equipment. It's just ridiculous. Prisoners give up certain rights when they go to jail and smoking should be one of them."

Every person might have its personal idea about establishing of “new air” cells.
